Coldwater is exit 271 on I-55, about nine miles south of our base in Hernando, just across the line into Tate County.
For roofing in Coldwater, MS, Advance Roofing & Restoration is a short drive down I-55 from our base in Hernando. Coldwater is exit 271 and Hernando is exit 280, so the town is about nine miles of interstate from us. Greg Stephens owns the company, and we cover Coldwater homes for replacements, repairs, upkeep and free inspections.
Coldwater began in 1856 as Elm Grove, a village that grew up when the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad came through, and it took its new name from the railroad depot. It was incorporated in 1872 as part of DeSoto County, and a year later it landed inside the new Tate County.
Then the town moved. When the Corps of Engineers built Arkabutla Dam on the Coldwater River for flood control, the federal government relocated Coldwater and about 700 residents in 1942 to new ground south of the old site, most of which is still under water. A monument to the old town stands west of the Coldwater exit on I-55.
On a house that has carried several roofs since it was built, the boards underneath matter as much as the shingles on top. We tear off to the decking, replace whatever has gone soft, put on the new roof and clean the yard and driveway before we go.
A Coldwater roof with years left in it can still let water in at a single weak point, like a cracked boot around a plumbing vent or a valley full of leaves. We trace the leak to where it starts and fix that, and we say so plainly when a repair is all the roof needs.
A roof that gets looked at between storms lasts longer than one that only gets attention when it leaks. A maintenance visit clears the valleys, reseals around vents and chimneys and replaces the odd shingle before it turns into a stain on the ceiling.
If you are not sure whether your roof needs work at all, a free inspection answers it. We go up, look at the whole roof and tell you what we saw, whether that is a repair, a replacement or nothing yet.
Because the whole town moved in 1942, the Coldwater that stands today was built on new ground from the early 1940s on. The census shows how fast it filled in: 690 people in 1940, 949 in 1950 and 1,450 by 1970.
That puts a large share of the houses in town at fifty to eighty years old. A house that age has usually been reroofed more than once, and some still carry a second layer of shingles over the first, which hides the condition of the decking underneath. On a Coldwater roof replacement, the written estimate spells out how any bad decking will be handled before the tear-off starts.
Near the Lake and the River Bottoms
Arkabutla Lake and the Coldwater River sit just north of town, and the low, wooded ground around them stays damp. Houses under big trees collect leaves and limbs in the valleys and gutters, and a roof that stays shaded and wet ages faster on its north side.
Regular roof maintenance is the simple answer to that. Keeping the valleys clear and the seals sound around vents and chimneys heads off the slow leaks that start under a pile of wet debris.
The Two Roads From Hernando
The quick way to Coldwater from Hernando is nine miles south on I-55. The long way is MS 304 Scenic, which winds about 31 miles past Arkabutla and Eudora and comes into town on US 51.
Either way, Coldwater is close to home for us, and it sits between Hernando and Senatobia, the Tate County seat, which we also cover.

How can I stop my roof from leaking?
If water is coming in now, move what you can away from the drip, catch it in a bucket and call us, since we are open 24 hours. The first step on our end is a tarp or temporary cover to keep the house dry. The permanent fix comes after we find where the water is getting in, which is often not right above the stain.
How long does a roof repair take?
It depends on what is wrong, and a cracked vent boot is a very different job from rotten decking under a valley. After a free inspection we tell you what the repair involves, so you know what to expect before any work starts.
Does homeowners insurance cover roof leaks?
That depends on your policy and on what caused the leak, and the claim is between you and your insurance company. If you file, we can be on the roof when the adjuster comes out to your Coldwater house. If the claim is approved, we work from the scope your insurer approves.
My Coldwater house is decades old. Does it need a full replacement?
Not always. Age alone does not decide it; the condition of the shingles, flashing and decking does. We inspect the roof and tell you plainly whether a repair will hold or a replacement makes more sense.
Do you clean up after a roof replacement?
Yes. Once the old roof is torn off and the new one is on, we clean up the yard and driveway before we leave.
